Last night, a full meeting of Falmouth Town Council saw the passing of a motion which would promote the use of the Cornish language (Kernowek) in the civil and cultural spaces of Falmouth. Around 50 Green Party members and supporters gathered at Chacewater Village Hall yesterday for the Cornwall Greens’ conference. It was a day of speeches, strategy sessions and constituency-level organising. The majority of attendees were active members, councillors or committee representatives, joined by a handful of independent councillors and representatives from Mebyon Kernow. Kernow Rydh, the youth branch of Mebyon Kernow, led a demonstration of c.100 today in favour of Cornish nationhood. The demonstration was held on Lemon Quay, Truro, with speakers for a coalition of campaign groups from around Cornwall, such as Cornwall Resists, Bakers Food and Allied Workers’ Union, Palestine Solidarity Kernow, and others. It comes after the closure of a recent petition to “Grant Cornwall Nation Status”, signed by over 24,000, asking the UK government to give Cornwall “equal status to Wales and Scotland”. Lord Hutton has been given no choice but to resign from his position at the Hall for Cornwall. This follows a campaign launched by local activists to see Hutton, the Director of an Israeli-owned arms company, ousted from his role in local institutions – namely the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Economic Forum and the Hall for Cornwall. Today, hundreds of spectators turned out in Marazion, West Cornwall to attend the ceremonies of the Gorsedh Kernow. Established in 1928, Cornwall’s Gorsedh comprises 496 bards, those who have been nominated for their service to Cornwall’s culture, language, and politics, 22 of which are new members . The ceremony was attended by family and friends, as well as local MPs, Councillors, and prominent community members. This afternoon, Acorn members undertook a Member Defence demonstration outside of Martin & Co. letting agency, Falmouth. This was following what Acorn describes as a consistent failure of Martin and Co. to deal with the abysmal state of a member’s residency. This particular member had reached out to Acorn over the state of the mould in her residency, which caused her serious physical health issues. A campaign calling for the boycott of publisher Watkins Media has launched on Friday 1st August. It comes after campaigners discovered a partnership between Watkins CEO Etan Ilfeld and an Israeli venture capital firm Remagine Ventures. Today marks the start of 5 days of industrial action at GPs and hospitals across England and Cornwall as doctors strike over pay. Resident doctors, formerly known as junior doctors, voted to take strike action in the fight for pay restoration, with strike ballot returning a 90% endorsement. According to the British Medical Association (BMA), a trade union representing over 195,000 medical workers, real-term pay has decreased by 21% since 2008. At a full council meeting this morning, Cornwall Council passed a motion in favour of greater autonomy for Cornwall, and will request that Westminster formally recognise Cornwall as one of the five nations of the United Kingdom. In Truro, 8 arrests were made this morning at a protest organised by Defend Our Juries in support of Palestine Action. This follows the proscription of the group under the Terrorism Act 2000 on 5th of July 2025. Today, two students graduating from Falmouth University disrupted their ceremonies. The students were drawing attention to the university’s alleged complicity in the genocide in Palestine. Since Cobblestone first revealed that complaints had been lodged with Cornwall Council’s Monitoring Officer about Jude Robinson’s online conduct, the Labour councillor has made a series of abrupt moves to manage her public profile, culminating this week in her complete withdrawal from Twitter. Robinson, re-elected to Falmouth Town Council in May, has faced growing criticism for sharing posts from far-right figures, including ex-Britain First figure Jayda Fransen, and accounts that regularly publish Islamophobic and transphobic content. A Labour town councillor in Falmouth is facing growing scrutiny after social media posts emerged linking her to far-right figures, and sharing Islamophobic and transphobic content. Jude Robinson, who won her seat on Falmouth Town Council in the recent local elections but who failed to win a seat on Cornwall Council, has been criticised by fellow councillors and members of the public over a history of controversial online activity. Since Saturday at the West Holts Stage, punk duo Bob Vylan has garnered attention from much of the right in the country, after their chants of “Free Palestine” and “Death to the IDF”. Far-right activists in Cornwall are calling for the group to be banned from performing at Boardmasters. Counciller Peter Lawrence was filmed in an antisemetic rant during the pro-Reform “Great British National Strike” demo in Truro. Members of Cornwall Resists were able to film Lawrence saying openly that antisemitism “technically” didn’t exist and that Hitler didn’t “have beef with the Jews”.
