Last night, a full meeting of Falmouth Town Council saw the passing of a motion which would promote the use of the Cornish language (Kernowek) in the civil and cultural spaces of Falmouth. The motion, put forward by Cllr Sam Carmichael entailed the use of the Cornish language on signage, official Falmouth Town Council documents, and see the appointment of a Cornish culture champion.

The motion was put forward in an context of reaffirmed awareness about the Cornish language, and a push for autonomy for Cornwall within the United Kingdom. Last week, a petition closed calling for Cornish nationhood, to ensure the preservation and promotion of Cornish culture and heritage and over the weekend, Kernow Rydh, the youth branch of Mebyon Kernow, mobilised in Truro to advocate for Cornish devolution.

During the brief debate on the motion, Councillor Dean Evans raised implications of cost of the motions’ implementation. In their responses, both Cllrs Carmichael and Stephens reiterated the voluntary nature of any trainings undergone by council staff.

The motion received unanimous support from the members of the council.
