This morning, activists in support of Take Back Power took action in Sainsbury’s by redistributing food products in its Truro outlet. Two people arrived at the store on Treyew Road at 9am, collecting food from the shelves without paying and tipping the contents into food bank donation boxes. The action was aimed at directly aiding the local community and raising awareness of worsening inequality.

The broader Take Back Power campaign hopes to implement fundamental system change with a “House of the People” – a permanent citizen’s assembly with direct political power. They point to rising profits of privatised industries such as water, transport, and energy in the midst of worsening living standards.

Take Back Power began its campaign in Autumn of last year. Supporters of the group have reached headlines in December, when they threw apple crumble and custard over the casing of the Crown Jewels. Similar stunts, namely their dumping of manure beneath a Christmas tree in the London Ritz have garnered the ire of right-wing news outlets.

Reporting by the Financial Times suggests Sainsbury’s is set to clock underlying operating profit of roughly £1bn for the financial year ending March 2026, a major milestone for the company. This takes place in a context of rising prices at the tills, and layoffs of roughly 3,000 café staff in 2025. The company is the second-largest supermarket retailer in the UK, with one and a half thousand stores nationwide.

A press release from Take Back Power has claimed that similar actions took place in London, Manchester, and Exeter. Action-takers in London reportedly redistributed food to the local community from a stall outside the store.

One action-taker in Truro stated:

“Hard-working ordinary people should not have to rely on foodbanks to get through the week, and billionaires must pay more tax. It’s not rocket science. The Media and politicians are controlled by the super-rich whilst ordinary people are struggling to be heard.

“In Cornwall today, there are 27,000 children living in poverty, and we are one of the most deprived regions in Western Europe. I’m taking action because I cannot be a bystander while the billionaires take everything and corrupt our democracy.”

A spokesperson for Take Back Power stated:

“It is sickening that 6.5 million people in the UK are forced to turn to food banks every year and a third of children under five are living in homes where there is insufficient access to nutritious food. This is because our country is in crisis, with billionaires hoarding wealth, whilst ordinary people suffer. We need to tax extreme wealth to fix Britain, and we need ordinary people to decide how.”
