Yesterday, a group of 150 Cornish residents gathered on the Penzance promenade at 11:30, for a “Red Line for Gaza” protest. The demonstration, publicised on the Palestine Solidarity Cornwall and Penzance Quakers’ Facebook and Instagram pages was primarily attended by families and older residents of Penzance and the surrounding communities. This comes just two weeks after a demonstration of 300 attendees in Truro, which comprised a coalition of groups organising in Cornwall, such as Palestine Solidarity Cornwall, Cornwall Resists, and Youth Demand.

The demonstration began with a short speech given on the promenade’s bandstand, followed by a 15-minute silent vigil, with those gathered in a line along the promenade. The protesters then followed a short procession, and dance, before leaving the promenade.

The Red Line for Gaza protest is a national campaign that those in Penzance have also undertaken in the two years of genocide since October of 2023, which at time of writing has reached an officially recorded death toll of 68,000, though some point to a toll of over 600,000. The campaign aims to pressure the UK Government to “do more to ensure full implementation of the ceasefire, lasting peace and accountability.”
